Wondering what peoples opinions are on the more popular SD ammo's out there.
Choices being:
Federal Hydra-Shok Tactical
Federal Hydra-Shok Personal Defense
Federal EFMJ Tactical
Speer Gold Dot
Corbon +p HP
Hornady XTP
Which do you prefer and why? Also, since I have a 4" Compact in 45ACP I'm thinking of going with 185gr instead of 230gr (EFMJ's only come in 200gr though) for higher velocity out of the short barrel.

My first choice of ammo for all my guns are Black Talons/Winchester Range SXTs, low recoil; nice mushroom and just a reliable round. Currently I have a mag of that stacked in my .40 and two mags or it stacked in my 9mm.
When I can't find any of that my next choice is Federal. We all know federal and you just can't go wrong. Federal makes a great overall round.
When I'm SOL and can't find those two I settle for Speer Gold Dot. It's not a bad round but when you're used to the better stuff then you try and stick with it.
Remington Golden Saber but you dont have it listed. Thats what I carry anyway, not sure if its the best.
I like the golden Saber also, plus Corbon, plus Speer Gold Dot. I have another that was a limited run, but can't remember the name of it. I feel as long as you pick a top name manufacturer of ammo you are usually good to go. I have several different manufacturers.

I almost try to go with a top name that has been around for a while and proven it's stuff.
I've heard good things about Hornady, but in my personal experience they suck ass.

I also haven't listed Winchester SXT because it has a horrible reputation of not having the energy that Winchester claims. Winchester refuses to release loading data to the public, but independent tests show it is far weaker than the others listed above.
I should've listed Golden Sabers, but I can't find them for under 1$/round like the rest I mentioned above.
I'll leave the poll up until the end of the week, but it looks like I'll be going with the Federal Hydra-Shok LE Tactical (HST2) so far. I wonder if people just like that stuff because of its steel penetrator core.

They aren't as great as the originals of course, but Ranger SXT is another version of the Black Talons.

I've got the Hornady XTP 9mm for my XDm. I can't speak on experience. I just bought it because it was recommended to me by a self proclaimed, experienced, ex-military, shooter that owned the gun store.

One that I should've put on the list instead of XTP (old hat) is the newer Hornady TAP ammo. But it isn't sealed and I'd hate to store that stuff too long. With how hard it is to get PD ammo at a decent price I wouldn't want to be forced to burn that ammo and not be able to find replacements.
Federal LE HST2 is the winner then, price is 34$/50. Considering the gouging on PD ammo (1-2$ per round) I consider this a pretty decent price.

Well I ordered 100 rounds of the HST2's from ATG. Already got my shipment notification and UPS shows they have the package en-route. I'll be damned, that is fast. And it'll be here first thing next week. YAY!
