View Full Version : 9mm Suppressed SBR project

I have decided to start a new 9mm AR SBR project so i figured i would document along the way. I am in reality only doing half a build as I am starting with a factory Colt 6450 9mm. So my lower is already a complete factory 9mm lower... I have since removed the factory 16" upper and that will be the new build portion.

1) I have filled out my Form 1 paperwork (available at http://www.titleii.com) to create a new short barreled rifle in duplicate and filled out the citizenship compliance form, and photocopied my trust documents...all that and 200.00 have been sent to the BATF and the 3-4 month wait begins.

2) While waiting for my form 1 to be approved, I am at a standstill with the upper. This makes for the perfect time to work on my lower to get it where i want. Tonight I was able to get a Magpul Moe Mil-Spec stock and Moe grip.. I have replaced the factory Colt 4 position stock with the new magpul Moe as well as swaped the A2 grip for a Magpul Moe grip with storage compartment.

7.5" barrel and 7" DD rail? That would look very nice. I plan on going 10.5"/10" for my future SBR. Maybe 9.5"/9" if the ballistic data says it'll still hold decent 100yd accuracy, but so far it seems 10.5" is the minimum barrel length for my wants/needs.

Was at the show today and saw scott from spikes... he did not have any stripped 9mm uppers with him but I did geta magpul rear flip for my rock river .223 as a test if I like it..which i already do... i will get another set of front and rear from scott for the 9mm build.

I did pickup the spikes 9mm buffer and spacer on scotts recommendation and I will be going with a TROS 5" 3 lug barrel.. I already havethe email out for the barrel as i hear there is 3 month lead time

Good choice on the Spike's buffer. I have a couple of T2 tungsten buffers already for my first 2 builds.

If you want, I'll help make sure he brings atleast one 9mm upper with him next time he's at a show down there. But if you already have your heart on the TROS barrel, then I can just ask them to bring the 9mm upper receiver. Btw, have a new internally-buffered 9mm BCG coming out in a couple months. It still needs a buffer, so combined with the Spike's 9mm buffer you will have a reliably soft-shooting 9mm.

Good choice on grabbing the MagPul MBUS. You can't beat that price. Instant resale if you didn't like it.

I need Scott to remember to bring a few different uppers to the Lakeland show. With 6 lowers I'm trying to decide what each of them should be purposed for. I think I've narrowed it down to:

1 - Recon Carbine
2 - SPR or Tack Driver
3 - SBR
4 - 9mm
5 - 22LR
6 - Lefty Carbine or SBR

Today is my lucky day!!

Where you going to hide that barrel until your paperwork comes back? lol jk

spikes40
08-15-2009, 05:49 PM
my parents live a few miles away...probably just store it there until the papers come back...i just had to secure it while it was available

I have the 5" Tros. Extremely happy with it. I just installed a 9" Tros on a friend's AR upper replacing the Gemtech 5" barrel that was part of the Gemtech Talon package. He couldn't get satisfactory accuracy with the Gemtech. Turns out when I went to take the old barrel out, the barrel nut was only hand tight. Most likely the cause of the accuracy problem. Shame on Gemtech.

ss1

I need suggestions and handguards now.. which rail system do you suggest?

One that will fit your suppressor. Find out the OD of each possible suppressor you might go with and make sure your rail choice's ID will fit it. I'm partial to Troy, but Daniel Defense has some nice one ones as well.

JaxChris
08-15-2009, 09:37 PM
DD Lite rail has a 1.22 ID, DD M4 rail has a 1.62 ID. The YHM, GG&G, Troy MRF, and POF all have (I believe) a greater than 1.5 ID which is the OD of most 5.56 suppressors out there.

I'm thinking of getting a YHM rail with the end cap and sizing the end cap out to just fit the suppressor and only have 0-1 inches of suppressor showing. Thinking 6" suppressor with 5" barrel with a 10" rail. But that will change many times between now and SBR/suppressor time. First build is carbine, second build is SPR.

Just spoke with andy blanchik rom KGB armament in pompano...he said he can do my engraving while i wait and can get me my swr trident suppressor for 200.00 less then vito at OTB...life is good... with do both asap

JaxChris
08-18-2009, 06:58 PM
Are you just having "Registered SBR" engraved or are you going to wait and have your stamp # put on as well?

So how much is the suppressor running you, 600$?

spikes40
08-18-2009, 07:16 PM
the engraving is required to have the name of my trust, city and state.. to a batf depth standard...the stamp number is just the serial number

the can from andy@KGB is running 600.00 or so out the door..from vito @ only the best was going to be close to 800.00 out the door

JaxChris
08-18-2009, 08:43 PM
I think the MSRP on those things is only 650$, why the hell is Vito charging over MSRP on something that takes forever to receive?

Oddly enough, I've read that most people file the paperwork with the brand name, city, and state that is already on the lower.

Example:
Spike's Tactical
Apopka, FL

Then they will get "Registered SBR" laser engraved on opposite side of the magwell where you usually find "For Law Enforcement or Government Use Only". That is what I was planning to do after reading the NFA Gun Trust Blog top to bottom. Apparently you are not the true manufacturer just because you threw an upper on a lower. The manufacturer is the company/trust that actually machined the lower that is being registered.

People who put their Trust on a lower as the manufacturer are people that machine their own lower from a 60-80% forging, is my understanding.

This could spark a big debate, but from what I've already read up on this you are not the manufacturer of the controlled part (the plain lower being registered). You can register it under your Trust for protection, but the manufacturer is not your Trust.

Have any links explaining why you must list a Trust as the manufacturer to an already recorded and manufactured lower?

I need C3PO!!! Where is that damn ATF/NFA Protocol Droid?!?!?!

spikes40
08-18-2009, 08:57 PM
jax, when paperwork is filed, the manf. name, city, and state are stated on the paperwork...once approved, it has now been remanufactured as a short barrel and you are now the manf. hence having to mark your info on it... never have a seen just register SBR..the name of the registeree must be engraved...it sux but no way around it

the only time you dont have to is when it is a factory SBR..then no engraving is needed

JaxChris
08-19-2009, 04:13 AM
Ok, this is why it is so confusing... nobody ever hears or is told the same thing, even when they ask an ATF NFA Examiner. =(

Well if they are referring you to section 479.102, it applies to "licensed" importers, manufacturers, and makers/dealers of NFA weapons - which are done on a Form 2. Since you aren't a licensed maker/manufacturer, you can't label a firearm as such. An approved Form 1 only gives you permission to use that firearm (the lower receiver) in the way outline on the paperwork. If I decide to sell that firearm to someone and have it marked as being manufactured by an unlicensed maker (the Trust), that is considered selling an illegal weapon.

The lower receiver is considered the firearm and the rest are just parts. I have to get an approved Form 1 in order to use it a certain way (use as a SBR), but since I can't sell it as such I can't mark it as such.

Marking the lower receiver by an individual, trust, or corporation appears to be misinformation when referred under 479.102 which applies to Form 2 manufacturing.

There is verbiage under Chapter 53 that states an individual must mark & register a receiver if they machine their own from a blank forging and don't buy an already recorded lower from a manufacturer. Those you must mark with the City & State that it was created in, provide the name it was created under, what caliber it is designed to utilize, and also give it a unique serial number you have not used on anything else you've created.

Blah, I don't know. I seriously think I'm just going to wait for the FFFA to pass and then I'll assemble an SBR and maybe machine my own silencer. Just mark them "Made in Florida" and screw the tax stamp/NFA bullshit. Make an appointment with an ATF Branch, bring the lower, and ask the NFA examiner. People that have done that are told you use the already engraved data from the lower only. People that make their own lower from scratch must engrave their information and register it.

The build is coming along.. I picked up my Eotech 516 yesterday and I have just paid for my SWR Trident 9 Suppressor...Will be ordered from SWR Monday and will transfer to my Class III in 4 weeks or so...at that time my paperwork will go out for the transfer from my class III to me... I hate waiting!

JaxChris
08-23-2009, 04:47 PM
4 weeks to deliver an in-stock item before you even get your serial number to submit your transfer paperwork?

Shit, almost work pay 20-30$ more to save 4 weeks.

spikes40
08-24-2009, 07:45 PM
and to top it off... i got a nasty gram today from vito telling me to delete his contact info and our relationship is officially over...because i baught from someone else

JaxChris
08-24-2009, 09:02 PM
Why? Because he saw that you posted how he gouges for 200$ over MSRP on a silencer? Tough shit for him - nothing should be over MSRP now, competition is tough and the panic is over. Everywhere you look places are now getting in all their backorders and causing them to get overstocked. Look at all the sales going on now. Don't worry man, if he's that unprofessional and can't handle a customer buying from a better competitor then you aren't the only person he's driving away.

Only thing I have trouble finding is a healthy supply of pre-made barrels from the big names. Which is why I'm either going to continue waiting it out after I get my rails or just continue with my current plan of having Ballistic Advantage make me custom barrels to my specs/applications.

spikes40
08-24-2009, 09:20 PM
agreed.. i will miss nothing by not dealing with him...KGB Armament in Pompano will handle all my class III business now. Andy is a stand up guy!

as long as i get a stamp they are welcome to it

JaxChris
08-26-2009, 06:58 AM
Make sure you check the back and don't mark it with anything about your Trust being out of order. They'll still send the stamp even if the Trust doesn't meet their standards. It's like they are setting you up for failure, especially since they put that notice on the back and don't attach it to the front as a proper warning.

spikes40
08-27-2009, 10:07 PM
jax what do you mean trust being out of order?

JaxChris
08-27-2009, 11:23 PM
Look around on some of the NFA forums and you'll see that some people still receive a stamp but on the back of the approval is a notice that their trust did not appear to meet criteria. It's like they said you the stamp just because you paid, they don't actually seem to deny you for an illegitimate trust. Only denials people see now are if their status has changed which makes them ineligible.

spikes40

And btw, you didn't submit your form with "less than 16 inches" as the length did you? Sadly that doesn't fly anymore like it used to - which is what I was planning to do so I wouldn't be bothered if I decided to switch up to different barrel lengths. I guess the ATF now wants you to have multiple SBR's (one per barrel) instead of just one.

Most 9mm suppressors are pretty thin. Not a chance with a 5.56 can.

Make sure you hold onto them though, they could become collectible if ARMS rampage of stupid lawsuits continue to win. ARMS is saying the flip style adjustable rear sight peep is their property even though 3 manufacturer's had products with this feature on the market before ARMS ever even showed off a development product.

ARMS is also suing LaRue because they have a patent on the number 17 (along with almost 40 other numbers) when used in firearms. They are suing LaRue because they named a product the LT-170.

And ARMS is suing Troy for their rails - again.

ARMS is an old company with no more creativity (he ran his people off and they started other companies). Now ARMS stays in business by contracting out their construction to foreign nations and suing today's market leaders by any means they can with their patent portfolio. Fuck ARMS.

Just make sure not to fire the weapon backwards, that would really suck for you.

Cool, I didn't know the Troy had a large enough I.D. to support a suppressor. That's going to look really nice. I love the integrally suppressed look that you get with a suppressor under the rail. =)

*hint hint* =)

The Troy can support a suppressor just not a trident... An evo or a vortex has no problems

Just got my YHM Diamond FF handrails ordered..hopefully this will complete my build

JaxChris
12-30-2009, 06:42 PM
The YHM Diamond is a great rail... but it is noticeably heavier than other rails of the same size. Got the 12" model on the woman's SPR and you can feel the weight up there, but that's a good thing on an SPR anyhow.

with the limited choices i had...not to concerned about the extra weight...will have a tango down stubby vertical grip anyhow

You're welcome! You should be extremely happy with it. I'd like to hear it compared to the evo 9 I have. Maybe we can get Aquajon to get his w/ the Gemtech out there and try to find a sound meter we can borrow.

Aren't SMG's full auto/select fire weapons? Or is it open to all SBR's?

Andy B

The SMG matches at Malabar are open to all reg smgs and pistol caliber carbines. There is a separate semi class. You will not fine anything like it here in Florida. Sure beats standing on a line and shooting at trash.

There are carpools from Miami for every match. If you want to be put on the mailing list contact me. tacticalacademy@bellsouth.net

Malabar huh? Good old Space Coast has all the fun. I miss working over there. I remember when Palm Bay next door was still nothing but farm land.
