I recently acquired a set of the Surefire Earpro EP4 Sonic Defenders. I needed to find a resolution to shoot the AR-15. I was running into problems trying to look into my scope and the stock of the gun wanting push my headset off. I happen to run into these while looking at tactical flashlights on Surefire's website. I tried them out in an indoor range, yes they are a little bit louder than using your conventional headset. It did help reduce the sounds and help to keep you much cooler when shooting inside. Speaking to others in the range was a little bit better to hear them also. For the retail price of $12.95 for EP3 or $13.95 for EP4, I thought they were worth the investment.

Specs from Surefire:

DESCRIPTION

EP3 Sonic Defenders® and EP4 Sonic Defenders® Plus protect your hearing, without interfering with your ability to hear routine sounds and conversation. Safe sound levels are allowed to pass through while potentially harmful noises (above 80dB) are reduced via a proprietary design that incorporates the patented Hocks Noise Braker filter. When even more hearing protection is required—without the need to hear routine sounds or conversations—Sound Defenders' attached stoppers can be inserted. The right/left color-coded Sonic Defenders are made from a soft, hypoallergenic polymer and ergonomically shaped, with a multi-flanged stem, providing a comfortable all-day fit. And their low-profile design means they can be worn while wearing a helmet or mask or while using a phone or headset.

EP3 Sonic Defenders® are double-flanged for a proper fit for most people.

EP4 Sonic Defenders® Plus are triple-flanged for those with larger ear canals.

Both types of Sonic Defenders are sold in single left/right sets or in a box containing 25 sets. EP3's (double-flanged) come in S, M, and L while EP4's (triple-flanged) can be ordered in M and L sizes. Review the earpiece sizing chart below for assistance in getting just the right fit. Each set is packaged in a convenient carry case.

19db's isn't enough for me. If I'm using plugs, I wear Hearos foam plugs...they're rated to 32db and run about $5 for eight sets.

Yes, they are good, but I don't like the fact that I always have to make sure I have them stocked up. One pair, don't worry about them.

I've used them for some time. I find them extremely comfortable; however, I primarily use them with the little plugs out and I wear electronic ear pro's over them. It allows me to take my electronic ear pros off when stepping away from a hot line and yet hear perfectly while wearing the electronic ones and it gives me the little extra protection when next to someone with a cannon or SBR. They come in different sizes which is great, as I always find non foam off the shelf in the ear plugs to be too small.

Those plugs are just like percussion filters that drummers use for rehearsal. I have a set that I wore to the range, but the filter on the percussion ones isn't as high of a rating so my ear rang like a bitch and sounded like a broken phone speaker for a couple minutes. :(

They're styled very similar to the flanged buds on my headphones, but I prefer the foam buds instead. They're rated 34-36dB.

So the surefires I have to purchase from them or is there an alternative to the site? Does Guntech have some? I doubt it, but I had to ask.

I bought 3 pairs already from both Optics Planet and from Midway. I can't remember which was cheaper but the pair I got a couple of weeks ago from Midway available inventory is in real time and was in stock and got to me within 5 days. Optics Planet was backordered and they don't tell you until you've already ordered about it being backordered. They don't charge you more for split shipping tho, so it wasn't so bad.

Guntech had the pair that I got in the store. They were not for sale though. I would get from Midway like Phil said.
