15 -22.. I saw one yesterday.. jamed all day.. looked like a toy
I heard they were much better then the Colt AR 15-.22
Confirmed they are much better than Colt. The few people I know that have them run flawless compared to Colt's version. I can't see why you aren't able to get these in NY, I know one of my friends has the Colt version up there. I want to say they had it at his local dealer also, not in NYC.
Here's a thread earlier on the M&P 22 http://tacticaladv.com/showthread.php?t=1101
Although I haven't shot the rifle, I have worked on it as a gunsmith. They certainly feel very well built although I wish they would have used a mil spec lower extension tube (buffer tube) instead of the integrated composite design.

I think the reason he cant get it in NY, is because S&W produced a compliant model of the M&P15-.22 for states like NY, that does not have a flash suppressor, a collapsible stock, and only comes with a 10rd mag. For that reason I would gather that the shops there only carry the compliant model and not the regular (aka cool) model.

nice, you'll have fun! it's really cool rifle. I went to the range with the M&P 22 and my Rock River AR15 and every time I went back to the little 22 it put a smile on my face :)
figures that now they have a threaded version for sale, I'm going to send out my barrel shortly to get threaded so I can put a flash suppressor on it. in the end I won't spend any extra money, but it's a little more work. pretty funny, Phil made a tool from scratch to remove the barrel, ninja. once mine's back together I'm going to digi-camo it, should be fun :)
