View Full Version : 9mm AR
When I first set eyes on a factory 9mm AR, my impression was that it looked like a hack job and I wanted no part of one. Fast forward a few years and I think it is becoming one of my favorite AR's and I'll throw out my observations on why. First, you don't have to deal with the added complexity of SBR effects of a gas impingement and breech locking system. Second, the performance of the 9mm round is largely maximized at a barrel length much shorter than the non NFA 16" length barrel requirement. Third, suppressor performance for 9mm platforms are second only to .22's in terms of noise reduction efficiency and subsonic round choices. None of these three points are meaningful if you aren't into NFA weapons, but the reality is that you can build a semi-auto suppressed SBR platform that allows the portability, mobility and stealth characteristics as the fabled HK MP5-SD while only needing many standard AR parts found easily on the web or your favorite gunshop.
Spikes Tactical bare lower
RRA lower parts kit w/ standard trigger group
RRA ambi safety selector
9mm hammer
Hahn dedicated lower conversion block
milspec diameter lower receiver extension tube (a/k/a buffer tube)
standard carbine buffer spring
9mm heavy carbine buffer
Magpul CTR stock
Magpul MIAD grip
GG&G vertical foregrip
RRA 9mm plain upper
RRA 9mm bolt
TrosUSA 5" barrel w/ tri-lug
Troy 7" MRF rail
MI BUIS
Badger Tac-Latch
Promag ambi sling endplate adapter
accessories:
Eotech 511
AAC tri-lug adapter
AAC Evo 9 CQB
C-Products 32 round 9mm mags
Blackhawk single point sling
The Eotech has been replaced already by Aimpoint's H1 micro dot sight and the MI BUIS are OUT OF HERE!! as the rear kept popping up from hitting either the sling or gear and from being very top heavy.

Hmm, you make a good case. I saw the 9mm ARs and said... wtf, what a pussy gun, but you have changed my mind. They have their place.
Nice, so when will you start this project?
I'm kinda with you Satan. They're cool, but if I wanted 9mm, I'd stick to a pistol. Just my opinion.

Already completed. That's it in the picture.

I hear you, and pistols certainly have a place in CQB tactics, but it doesn't allow you to have the range that a short carbine can give you. That picture is me shooting from the support side behind a barricade at 60 yds from the steel target. Nailed it every time. I'm a pretty good shot with my sig 226, but I doubt I could consistently ring the steel at 60 yrds w/ suppressor. Scale that down to a BG behind a hostage cover and what would you rather have in your hands?

Yeah...I gotcha, and I absolutely see why they make sense for you being into NFA weapons.
Pretty impressive to be nailing it at 60yrds. I've shot a 45 pistol at 50 yrds...maybe got 24" grps.
No doubt that it's better than a pistol, but I think I'd just rather have a high powered AR over a 9mm.

Application specific. That's what I love about AR's!
Yup...whatever you've got going on the long rifle is more my style. :D
Damn, that pic didn't even look like you. Maybe I was seeing more grey hair that threw me off. No, I am not taking any grey hair shots on you either, because I am not far behind ya.

Yeah, and I don't always wear a suit and tie either which does throw a lot of people off as well. :D

What's wrong with being a lefty?
ss1 ... you're a lefty?
Nope. Wade's philosophy is to make you do whatever on your untrained (support) side as you do on your trained (dominant, etc.) side. The goal is not just to be a natural bi-lateral shooter but there are pretty neat efficiencies in movement when you are able to just switch shooting hands rather than moving your entire body.
What's wrong with being a lefty?
dont you get a face full of brass?
dont you get a face full of brass?
a properly tuned AR shouldn't. Plus, the big half moon block you see covering part of the ejection port is a shell deflector that keeps the shells from going rearward. A couple of my AR's actually throw them forward. Running a suppressor on a short barrel AR has a downside of forcing gas back to the shooter. That's why the 9mm is such a pleasure to shoot. No gas blowback. I'm going to put a piston eventually on my .223 SBR AR.

Piston SBR's rock.
And like C3PO said, there is no disadvantage to being a lefty. If anything some lefties decide to be ambi shooters and receive the same benefits he was talking about above. The first few times you actually see the brass (it's moving fast and almost never see it) fly across your FOV can be startling, but you get used to it.
Mmmm piston suppressed SBR... pure sex right there! =)
