I'm looking at getting an auto shotty for the house and possibly getting into 3-gun in the future.

My list has narrowed pretty quickly to the Mossberg 930 SP series pretty quickly. Anyone have or had one in the past? I've heard it has a little more shoulder bite than a typical pump gun, but that the reliability and durability are top notch. Hoping a couple here can vouch for that before I decide to move forward and start shopping around for one.

Reason for the Mossberg is that I can't afford to get an FN SLP (or its Winchester SX3 clone) like I would want. But the Special Purpose series of the 930 also has dual gas ports, decent capacity, and available in the 18" barrel range.

One of the additional reasons for it being an auto shotty is so the woman doesn't have to worry about pumping it if she wants/needs to use it. I was tempted to step down to a 20ga auto to make it softer to shoot, but I would rather keep the damage potential of 12ga.

Thoughts and feedback are appreciated.

Didn't know they were ammo finnicky, but other than that they're good and realible just as all other Mossbergs

So Federal bulk packs from Walmart are a no-go?

I have read they don't like weak loads (is this what you are referring to?), that the spring inside is just a bit too stiff or long (when compressed) to allow a full magazine with 3" shells - but that using a Moss500 spring will free up the 1/8" needed, and you have to push the rounds in firmly when loading due to the ramp being very stiff.

Is all of that correct as well?

I had a 590 Mariner ten years ago. Was a solid shotgun.

The 930 was the gun that made me a semi auto guy.
I've pretty much always stuck with pump guns but I got a chance to get a 930 in trade early on, before the SPX was available.
In a way I may have built the first 930 SPX using a set of ghost right sights from a 590 and chopping the huge 28" barrel.
The gun has given me zero problems, runs great and cycles fast!
I've seen around the web that some folks have had trouble shooting light loads, I have no experience with that myself, I only shoot pretty heavy loads.(3" 00,magnum slug, ect.)

You'd do well to buy one.
If you get something else you'll just spend more money and get a heavier, slower gun.

Didn't know you could run a semi-auto shotty for 3-gun. Interesting.

Saiga is supposed to be introducing a new model.
