View Full Version : What shooting stance is better for personal protection?
I know most will say "which ever one you're most comfortable with", but what stance does the NRA/Military/whatever tell you to use?
Personally, I like to square up and shoot weaver stance.
I think it depends on the situation. Weaver stance is great for the range, but I don't think you can factually state that it is the best for personal protection.
I disagree with the weaver stance for my personal protection. If you are shooting a larger caliber there is not enough balance in my opinion. To each his own though, you need to find not what is comfortable but what works for you.
I naturally shoot semi-bladed and up to full-blade. You are a smaller target and your balance "triangle" is not impacted by any recoil. Most LEO tho will be taught to fire weaver because that is where their body armor affords them the most protection.

guess i'm all screwed up.
i've never had any real handgun training. so i just stand in what feels like to me, the most natural and comfortable position.

I prefer the weaver stance. there is something to be said for using whatever is comfortable to you though

For those that do not know the technical terms in relation to stance, how about a visual chart if you will and explain each of the pros and cons?
Taken from this thread (http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=35436):
The Isosceles Stance
Most new shooters will take this stance almost instinctively. The shooter fully extends both arms towards the target. The shoulders are kept perpendicular to the target and both elbows are locked. The name of the stance comes from how the shooter’s arms and shoulders form an isosceles triangle. The advantage to the stance is its simplicity and the fact that eye dominance is not an issue when using the Isosceles Stance. In addition, the shooter centers his/her weight neutrally or might even lean back slightly.

The Weaver Stance
This popular shooting stance was developed by Deputy Sheriff Jack Weaver in the late 1950s. Both elbows are belt with the dominant arm bent less than the support arm. The dominant hand (the one holding the pistol) pushes forward while the support hand (wrapped around the pistol) pulls back. The goal of this push/pull technique is to create isometric tension that will control the recoil of the pistol and provide accuracy and control for quick follow up shots. The shooter aligns his/her body at a 45-degree angle to the target and places the dominant hand and foot back foot back.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v433/Spyro700/Firearms/Weaver_Stance.jpg
The Chapman or Modified Weaver Stance
This stance is identical to the Weaver Stance but had one important difference. In the Modified Weaver, the shooter locks strait his/her dominant hand and arm. This modification helps with the trembling that some experience while using the Weaver Stance. If properly done, the shooter can still take advantage of the push/pull aspect of the Weaver Stance to control muzzle flip. Also, with the dominant arm locked straightt a shooter cannot overpower his weaker arm during times of stress. The tendency to push to hard in the Weaver Stance will cause a (right handed) shooter’s aim to skew to the left.

Bull’s-eye Stance
I will not add too much on this one. The feet are shoulder length apart, you hold the pistol in one hand with the arm outstretched, and place the hand not in use on your chest, hip, or even in a pocket. It is a single handed shooting style popularized by duelists. The advantage of the stance was that it allowes the shooter to make himself a smaller target by turning his body to the side thereby presenting the minimum target possible. Outside of Cowboy Action Shooting, I do not think many use this stance today.

Whichever one kills the attacker.
Whichever one kills the attacker.
Very good point. Do you really think you will have time to consider your stance when an attacker is present.

Shit no! I'd shoot from my pocket if I had to.

"wait a sec.. hold on... this is going to hurt my ears a lot more than its gonna hurt yours!" <motions to put on ear muffs and shooting glasses>
"Okay..! FREEZE MOTHERFUCKER!! YOURE GONNA DIIEEEE!!!"

Wrong answer Ms. NRA-certified instructor. The correct answer is "whichever one stops the threat". :)

Seeing as how I only use one stance, not really..lol

Excellent question. The question that has always ran threw my mind when at the range and watching others. While I understand breathing, trigger squeeze, and proper posture is all vital in putting your round down range in the location desired, how much time will you have to set up? When at what point do you abandon what is proper for what works best at that moment? In the end when you are forced to use your sidearm I know from my own experience that what I was taught and what I had to use in many cases were for the most part were polar opposites. I know the first time it was real and the targets started shooting back everything I had been taught went to hell in a handbasket :p

It is good to practice your technique at the range though so your shooting style is a habit. I often watch people at the range and you don't see anyone ever practice a point & shoot method. This is a method I make sure to practice every time I am at the range. I put up multiple targets changing each target after every shot. I have only seen one old man practice this method and he was double tapping on a snub nose .38. He was also very good too.

nope.. thats Bicho
ok.. joking aside
what is the proper stance for standup shooting with an AR( with foregrip and without, and including butstock extension) and shooting from a bench (which I have never done)
first time I shot my rifle, I felt very tense and the next day my neck and shoulders (both) were sore.. so I know I has holding it wrong somehow.
Chris

I doubt you were holding it wrong, you most likely were just tense in anticipation of recoil. I also believe from reading that would most likely be the cause of your off shots as well. Unfortunately I would prefer to shoot with you before I made suggestions on stance.
The brass tax is there is no RIGHT way. Every person has some issues to overcome that are unique to them and the only way to evaluate those is to see the student shoot. I think if we have a range day soon I will make an effort to invite you and we can take a look at that rifle and try to get you dialed in.

I was thinking the same thing. Geez masking tape, not exactly the most robust tape available. How about electrical tape or really spring some cash and go for duct tape? I am surprised they didnt use scotch tape. Amazing

I told you to stop posting pictures of me! Sheesh!
As for the 4-mag setup... that kid should have faced them in alternating directions so you just spin it forward 180-degrees instead of flipping it to the side. Wasted body movement since getting a grip from the front or back is too difficult to flip it. Easier to grab from the side and rotate forward. Plus the S shape would be more aerodynamic. lol
That fat bastard shouldn't even be in the field until he lost at least 100lbs.

I personally go for the "stand and shoot the bad guy" stance. I havent had to try it yet but with Obama turning this country on its ass and the economy getting worse by the second and crime climbing faster then ever...you never know.
