As a result of the work that I do, I find myself in non-permissive environments on many occasions so I had been looking at tactical pens recently. I also like pens and thought that one of these would be interesting. I ruled out most of the models presently out in the market because they require removing the cap and placing it on the pen in order to write with it. Too much trouble when you use a pen a great deal during the day. The Benchmade model looks too much like a weapon. I narrowed my search to the Surefire pen because it has a retractable ink cartridge. I went ahead and bought one and have been using it for a couple of weeks.

It is a large hefty pen weighing in at 1.8 oz and slightly more than 6" in length. It is well made of aerospace grade aluminum and stainless steel at the clip and tip. The clip is heavy duty and would hold up even clipped to a pocket of jean pants. It just fits into a shirt pocket due to its length. It uses a Schmidt ballpoint ink cartridge that presently comes only in black. The retractable point system works very smoothly and the pen can use any number of ink refills because it is adjustable for refills of different lengths. The Schmidt cartridge is a very well writing ink cartridge. In fact I sent an email to this company, located in Germany, to find out about getting a blue cartridge and found they will not be putting one on the market until January.

The pen has a glass break tip feature at the top of the pen and seems strong enough to break a windshield. This pen could be a formidible weapon and with some training it would probably be even more effective.

The only odd thing about the pen is that when the point is retracted there is a gap in the body of the pen. When the ballpoint is used the gap disappears.

Not a cheap pen but it is definitely high quality and I am pleased with it.

I hope this is useful if someone is considering one of the many tactical pens that are on the market.

a good point was brought up to me..this pen could be really useful in situation where a gun is restricted but a weapon may be needed to defend your life...say a plane? a heavy, indestructable, pointed object with a window punch that will make it past security due to the fact it is a pen
