View Full Version : 21, time to buy an XDM!

So, I turned 21 April 1st. I must now buy my first handgun, no?
I've been wanting the Springfield XMD now for some time. The question now is... what caliber do I want? Is .45 to big and not necessary? Would 9mm with hollow points be enough to get the job done? Or should I settle for a nice rounded .40? Choice, choices. Help me decide with good quality facts about each please.
:)

9mm

9mm is not a worthy defense round in my opinion... if it is for the range..9mm all the way..if this will be range/defense... i would not go less then a .40

If its for CC go with the .40, not too big not too small, home defense go .45.. If its just for range go with the 9mm. Also a 9mm is acceptable for defense with the right shot placement
XDm has not come out with a .45 yet.

in the heat of battle chances are you will not be able to focus on shot placement..just my .02
I was kicking around getting a Glock .40 for my CC but Guntech was out of them at the time. Cris steered me toward the .45 and I have to say I am much happier then I would have been with the .40 cal. The recoil on the .45 almost feels lighter then the 9mm Glock I fired. I would go .45 and not look back, least recoil and good stopping power. If XDM does not have a .45 then go the .40 or look at a different pistol.

I own both the Glock 23 (.40 cal) and the Glock 30 (.45) They are both outstanding weapons. The Model 23 is my duty weapon and I carry the Model 30 when I am not working. You can't lose with either one.

XDm has not come out with a .45 yet.I was thinking that. I guess that makes the decision a little easier! Ha.
I want it for defense and range shooting. I'm thinking .40 maybe.

I carry 9mm XD for CC most of the days and a G30SF on others. The .45 is outstanding, recoil is great stopping power etc. As for the 9mm I would some what agree with Spike40 but I still carry mine. You figure 2 to the chest and 1 to the head will stop any assailant. I practice that on a regular so it becomes a reflex action as aposed to aiming for joints and limbs. .40 is my next bet and that will be the XDM. Medium size round with a punch and minimal bulk.

Ive carried both 9mm and .45 on a regular basis. The .45 is obviously a little heavier, but with a Crossbreed Holster, it doesnt matter much to me. The 9mm is excellent for the range, but always felt it may not get the job done. I know some will remark on that last sentence, but its a personal preference.
As for the .45, its also a great range gun(my opinion), very comfortable, the only thing I'm missing on it is an ambidextrous mag release like the XD. Other than that I have no complaints about it. Very comfortable to shoot, powerful and my accuracy with it is getting much better. Still getting used to it, seeing I only put about 800 rounds through it so far.
My suggestion, go for a carry model, then progress from there.
This is the one I bought

alright, first off don't take my advice seeing i'm relatively new to firearms but i chose a 9mm over a .40. My reasons were that the SR9 is relatively lightweight and on top of that I have a capacity of 17+1...as opposed to 7 or 10 or whatever. Yes I know many will say well if you that many rounds well then u need some more range time but u never know what situation you may be in and I like to have more than i need and have some rounds left over rather than wishing I had a few more rounds. And I figure with enough training you can make a 9mm nearly as efficient as a .40 will be...alright let the flaming begin lol

I agree. Better safe than sorry. I mean... you never know when multiple idiots might come walking in while you're sitting in a dunken donuts trying to enjoy some breakfast late night. Next thing you know you're diving behind counters in a shoot out. Right? ha.
Also, the new XDm is 19+1 on the 9mm and 16+1 on the .40. So I feel pretty safe with either. I think I'm going to get the .40 though.
With a 9mm you will be able to reacquire your target faster too. 40 cal is the most explosive round making it harder to acquire your target after discharging your round. You will need to be efficient of a shot with this round for sure. With the ammo supplies the way they are now that may be hard to do. Also consider this, if you are going to be shooting this firearm frequently it is more cost effective to buy a 9mm, on an average it is $5 cheaper per 50 count boxes of 9mm to .40 cal. I do understand you want the larger caliber seeing that you are of the smaller caliber yourself. :raspberry:
I personally am holding out for the XDm 45, which will hopefully be out some time this year.

yh price was a big factor too in buying the 9mm SR9...cheaper to shoot at the range and I figured the difference between the performance (both positives and negatives) just made it worth it to stay with a 9mm rather than going up to a .40 or .45...but to be honest I do plan on getting a .45 eventually for my bedside....but this was my first gun so i figured i'd go with the 9mm seeing that I will spend a lot of time at the range etc

Cris saying you need to compensate for something.

Cris saying he needs to compensate for something even more than you.
I'll stick with the 9mm. In a carry situation, you won't need to worry about extra mags and a mag pouch.
No need for compensating here. I carried my XD 9 sub-compact for a while, now I am carrying my Ruger LCP .380. I am a big fan of the 9mm handguns, especially with how good I can shoot it. I finally got some range ammo for the LCP so I will checking this one this weekend hopefully.

Matt, since it looks like 40SW is in the lead and we already had the talk about going with an XD40 instead of an XDm, here is the best price I could find for you, and yes it's all black:
http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/21_24/products_id/30988
It's 459$ shipped. Goto Shoot Straight in Tampa for the FFL transfer, they only charge 10$. They are located near the fairgrounds and the casino.
That's a good deal, and a really good deal on the transfer fee. You want all black for conceal purposes anyway.

04-21-2009, 11:34 PM
ok guys....
I think I've made my decision.
I might just say fuck it and get my carry permit. Because lets face it... even if the zombies come, the government fails, and we all have to band together in a rebel group to scurry through the woods, they arent going to be able to use my finger prints for shit anyways! Right? Plus I don't plan on doing anything illegal so it probably won't matter.
Also, as much as I'd like to buy two guns, I can't right now. So it's sort of a one shot deal. At least for a little while. So I am thinking maybe I will just get the .45 XD compact, because I want a good home defense gun for the bed side, a possible future carry gun, and it may not be 9mm cheap, but it should be cheaper than taking the AR15 to the range. Right?
So that seems like the best choice for a one shot deal.
What do you think?
OMG, THE WORLD IS ENDING!!! Satan is going to give up his fingerprints!!!
The .45 is a good choice for self defense for sure. You won't be shooting it much at the range especially with the gouging prices going on today.

Yea, the price of 45ACP is about as bad or worse than 5.56 right now. Also, your hands aren't that big so you may want to limit yourself to the 40SW which uses the same size frame as the 9mm XD's. But there isn't much difference in price between 40SW and 45ACP.
The .45 is a much better shooter though. I don't think I will ever get a .40 cal unless I get some smoking deal on one.

But there isn't much difference in price between 40SW and 45ACP.I have a discount card at walmart. I'm sure they sell some sort of ammo I can use at the range, right?
Also, I think you're forgetting how big I am. I am 6'0 184lb. I'm up there with you. I got bigger hands than most. Big feet too, and you know what they say about that... :)

You still look like a string bean the last time I saw you. And the only problem with your Wal-Mart discount is that there usually isn't any useful ammunition in-stock anymore unless you like .22LR or need shotgun shells.

Then get the XD-40, you can swap between 9mm/357Sig/40SW with just a barrel and recoil spring change (9mm will require new mags, but 357Sig uses the same as the 40SW).
The extra barrel and recoil spring alone is 160$ and it's like having 2 weapons for the range.
They offer interchangeable barrels in 4" (Service/Compact) and 5" (Tactical) sizes. They don't offer them in 3" (Sub Compact).

Ok, I went to the gun store today. I held some XDs, some glocks, and some smith and wessons and shit.
I really liked how the XDM felt. It's very comfortable right out of the box with the medium sized back plate on the grip.
I think I've decided after comparing ammo prices and round performance, I will just go ahead and get a XDM in 9mm. After all I can always get a 1911 for bigger caliber later right? :)
JaxChris
05-01-2009, 09:30 PM
Went to the range again with the XD45. Again, my right-handed aim feels awkward but my shot groups are landing where I aim. Left-handed I'm low-left even though it feels natural. Going to have to spend more time with it.
Also tried a 5-shot burst to see how well I'm holding it. The shots climbed straight up about an 1.5 inches apart. So atleast I know I can aim for the gut and work my way up.
Considering the cost of 45 ammo I'm thinking I will also get a 9mm or maybe even a 22 for the range. Getting the 22 would make it a good cheap pistol for the woman to get comfortable with and build up the confidence for a 9mm or larger.
Matt, if you want a good 1911 you should expect to pay 1000$+. If you just want a 45 later on and you'll already be used to an XD or XDm, you would probably be more comfortable with an XD45.
My buddy that went to the range with me took 5 shots with the XD45 and said his wrists hurt. He shot his wife's Walther P22 the rest of the time there. lol

Ok, I changed my mind I think. Depending on the prices tomorrow I might get the XDm 9. Simply because I like the features and it feels even better than the XD, but if the regular XD has a way way lower price I might just sacrifise the features for the money.

Right-o! I really want the XDm, but my local store has theirs priced at like $650 or $670 something around there I can't quite remember. I have heard the regular XD9 is as low as $450 lately. So if that's the case I might just have to grab that. If not I will just put like half of it on my credit card and pay it off next month.
I think we sell the XDM 9 for $585.

Matt, there is a Gun Show in Orlando in 2 weeks. You can go there if you want. Shoot Straight usually has a ton of XD's and you can haggle the price down a little lower than their "show sale price". Plus you can tell them to deliver your weapon to their Tampa store across from the fairgrounds.
If not, call Cris for the XDm9 because 585$ beats the prices I've seen online and at the shows (though you could probably get a price match at the show).
Either way, make up your mind. Yesterday you changed your again within 5 hours?!?! lol
If you get it over here there, remember you will be back up to that price after shipping and transfer fee.

Matt, just fight to get May 16th off of work (Saturday) and I'll goto Orlando with you. I'll help you negotiate with the dealers and we'll get you a deal.
Only bitch is having to pay sales tax. But considering the lack of getting ripped off on a transfer or shipping it should balance out.

XDm 9mm, All black.
I am happy with the decision. It should be a very well rounded gun. My girlfriend said she will shoot with me, so 9mm will be good for her, ammo is cheap, and it's a hell of a gun. Soooo, when we going to the range Jax?

I need to pick up more 45 ammo. Can't go this weekend because it's Mother's Day weekend. No self-respecting man does anything for himself that weekend if he has a mother or wife/child-bringer within 200 miles of him.
But since I already cleared time with the woman for the gun show on May 16th, we could go then. Hopefully I can get some bulk ammo by then, or I'll just get raped on a single box on the way to the range.
Too bad you don't want to do the gun show though, I was thinking of going and grabbing an XD9 (either Service or Sub-Compact) for me and the woman to share. Then we could go halves on getting bulk ammo shipped to us (save by only paying 1 shipping charge).

I own few handguns including the XDM-9. I carry the Glock's as CCW, however for fun in the range the XDM is extremely accurate. Smooth trigger, short reset. The match barrel does make a difference when shooting more than 30 feet. I can easily hit center mass at all the way back on the range wall. I feel is too big for CCW but the 19+1 tempting when you do not want to carry extra mags, unless you use like a Kabar TDI fanny bag. I have one and I can fit the XDm and G34 with no problem. Overall is a nice handgun however I still find hard to justify the extra $$ for the M factor.
