I got my Mosin Nagant 91/30 today. I also got the ammo today too. I must say, it is a great looking rifle. It was all nasty with cosmoline and I spent most of the evening stripping and cleaning it but I am very happy. I cant wait to fire it. Here are a couple of pics.

I have a question. As a matter of opinion does anyone think I should get a set of headspace gages and check headspace before firing it or should I trust that AIM is selling a quality rifle and everything is fine? I am planning to call them today when they open. I am new to the relic/mil surplus stuff and would hate to injure someone or myself by overlooking anything.

If I knew what the hell you were talking about I'd be able to help ya, but I'm not into the surplus relics. Some numb nutts around here will have something important to say about. Just remember 90% of what Chris sais is lie.

Congrats Dan.

If you want to check headspace the cheap and easy way, you should take a spent shell and put it in the chamber. Close the bolt and tilt the rifle in different directions and listen for any wiggling (tapping sounds) from the shell floating in the chamber. If the shell can float, then you're in trouble.

If you hear any rattle from other areas of the weapon you can tape them down with painters tape to isolate noise to just the cartridge in the chamber.

You can probably call around and find a shop that will run a gauge down the rifling for you for free as long as you make some type of purchase while you're there.

(SecPro, if you haven't gathered, measuring headspace is done to ensure that a cartridge sits firmly and securely within the chamber to ensure centerfire operation)

Thanks Jax I will see if I can scare up a spent round somewhere. I am also going to put a call into AIM and get their take. I dont mind spending the cash on headspace gages but I would rather not wait 2-4 weeks to get them. I guess I am a little impatient and would like to fire this baby in the next week or so. Safety first so if I have to wait I will.

If you don't mind me asking where did you pick that up. Saw a place in California that sells them. Looks like they are nicely restored.

Yeah, but you get the play with M203s, the M60 etc!

JaxChris
05-01-2009, 09:18 PM
M203 you just get to fondle in basic, not actually fire unless you're assigned one in combat deployment. Same goes for M60, M249, and claymores.

HaHaHa, that thing was a BIOTCH!

I used a series of screw drivers and pry bars to pull on the straps and peel back the lid. You must be careful not to pry on the metal container as you risk hitting a primer. Its a real PITA. Not sure where you live but if you need a hand I have a pile of tools and can assist you.

There has to be a trick to it if they were able to open them on the field.

i figured out a way. I used long nose pliers to grab on the tabs then used a screw driver through the handles for leverage. Will be ordering these boxes once a month as long as they're available. Very clean ammo not to mention a cool looking wooden box!

Yes satan, they're called grenades.

Dan
05-05-2009, 02:56 PM
Once a month? Thats a lot of ammo. I was thinking about ordering a second box but after about 40rds my shoulder was bruised so I dont anticipate firing a ton of ammo through it. I guess at the price it makes sense to buy a second box when I get some extra $$.

Slowbra01
05-05-2009, 04:17 PM
well, that once a month plan isn't gonna start immediately lol. I still have a couple projects in the process. A second box is definitely gonna be on its way. I want to have one still sealed.

JaxChris
05-06-2009, 01:23 AM
So in other words you're looking to make an "investment" in more ammo since people believe it's drying up and costs on new runs will only jack up the price?

I can't see a Mosin being an every weekend shooter that you'd need that much. It's more a fun gun to pull out once in a while or to have in case the US goes the way of Red Dawn and you need to hit the invaders from a mile away with 5% accuracy.

Satan_3pc

or to have in case the US goes the way of Red Dawn and you need to hit the invaders from a mile away with 5% accuracy.I have my AR15 and my amatuer skills for that exact scenario.

Including the accuracy percentage.

Cris

Yeah I think you are overkilling that once a month thing, because everyone knows you only get out to do something every 3 months. So stop killing the ammo market.

JaxChris
05-06-2009, 08:17 AM
And there's no shot in hell he would use 800 rounds a year of that stuff, let alone a month.

I think Joe has Napoleon syndrome.

Dan
05-06-2009, 10:02 AM
I am at the range every other weekend and I could only muster to put 40rds through it. Its a fun rifle to fire. I may get another case of ammo so I will NEVER have to buy ammo for it again in my life...LOL

Slowbra01
05-06-2009, 01:53 PM
if i had Napoleon syndrome, i would have a friggin 50bmg. I would sell everything and just get that. Sadly, i have a far more worse disease. It's called "i need to have it all syndrome".

Reason why i would want to stock up on this ammo is mainly because i don't see many big name manufacturers making this round. Most of what's out there is whatever milsurp is left. I wouldn't mind having a couple of SEALED boxes of this stuff. As for the ammo market, heck, i'm not buying up anything at all. Until recently, i didn't even have ammo for the AR15. Shows how much "trust" i had in the market to always have it in stock and at reasonable prices. Apparently i was a fool to have believed that! lol.

I only have a handful of 10mm. enough for maybe 4 mags worth. So if anyone has a line on that caliber i would appreciate it lol.

Yeah i only come out every so often. But i like making a day out of it. I don't like going to the range every week for just 30mins-1hr. I want to sit there for hours and really submerge myself into the shooting. That's just me.

Cris
05-07-2009, 06:13 AM
Geez how long you had the AR15 for and you just got ammo for it. Now I am really disappointed in ya Joe. Let me know if you are going to order ammo RC and I will be needing some also, so maybe we can save a few bucks on shipping.

Cris
05-07-2009, 06:14 AM
By the way got confirmation of shipping yesterday. Aimsurplus called to confirm it will be shipping today. 2-3 days and it will be here. So I will probably see it at the shop next week.

I am planning to buy another 800rds from AIM some time this month.

Slowbra01
05-07-2009, 06:03 PM
WOW.......missed this by a few hours. I made another order to AIM last night for another box and some mags for the AK and AR. If you're looking to buy NOW i can add it onto my existing order. But perhaps you should wait until you get your hands on the MN to make sure all is well with the rifle first.

7.62x54r isnt selling like hotcakes the way 223 and x39 is. I'm sure they will still be available next month when i may make another purchase which is VERY likely.

I'm stocking up on the ammo i can find. which at the moment is x54r. Lou's just raised their price on 223 from $379 to $419. Safe to say i wont be buying that anytime soon. I have a good amount of 9mm and 45. What i'm looking for is 308 and 10mm which are ridiculously hard to come by ...esp the 10mm.

Pfft, unlike you two ladies my shoulder will be just fine. :raspberry:

I don't think this gun will see the range for a while as I may end up refinishing this piece.
