View Full Version : Sound Suppressor Question?

OK,
Living in communist NY we could not own anything. No pistols, no automatic knives, and certainly no automatic weapons or sound suppressors. Last week I was at Markham park and saw a guy firing a .45 with a suppressor. Are they legal to own here? What do I need to do to get one? I saw some stuff on the web about NFA firearms and it appears that sound suppressors are included in this but I could not find any links to any application paperwork. Can anyone chime in?

As Adam said, they are legal to own in the State of FL. They are considered an NFA item, so you will need to apply for a NFA tax stamp using a Class 3 FFL/SOT dealer. If the dealer has the suppressor you want in stock, they need to submit a Form 4 transfer form to the BATFE that will cost you $200. The application process can be done in as little as 6 weeks to 6 months depending on the volume of applicants at the time. If the dealer needs to order the suppressor then the supplier needs to submit a transfer form 3 to the dealer and then you start your process once that is approved. Since most suppressor makers will make the different models in batches, you could get lucky and get one right away or you could be waiting a loooong time before they are made and ready to transfer to your dealer.

We have a class 3 forum here (http://www.tacticaladv.com/forumdisplay.php?f=76) and there's a few sites such as silencertalk that can give you some BIASED (LOL) reviews. You'll quickly find out that the two biggest manufacturers, Gemtech and Advanced Armament Corp have some sort of blood feud going on. They both make some excellent cans. SWR is also an excellent brand. Surfire, YHM, Coastal, Quicksilver are just a few more manufacturers. Feel free to ask any questions and hope to see you soon in the world of silence. :)

Yep, they are legal. After shooting a few of "Class 3 Phil's" guns I was really liking the world of silence. I am still debating on doing it myself. My new 10/22 build and I am leaving the option open with getting a threaded barrel.

After looking into it I discovered that the suppressors were between $500 and $900 each plus I believe there is a $200 tax stamp I need. I would only do it for the "cool" factor. Right now I cant spend that much for just the "cool" factor. I need an AR first.

Get on the waiting list for an AR, unless you are buying a used one.

I got on the Rock River list with Rich about 2-3 weeks ago. He said to expect to be at least 3 months. Thats ok, I will wait.

I think you will be waiting longer, did you see how long that list was? You might be better off buying the lower and building as you get the money for it.

I was thinking about building but the only problem I see is getting a complete upper. I dont want to get a stripped upper and have to deal with barrel installation and head space. I guess if I could get a stripped lower and a complete upper I would think more about building. Honestly I dont mind waiting but I would like to build one because its what I like to do. I am a tinkerer by nature and can build anything. It would be fun. Just dont want to buy a bunch of specialty tools for one build, hence my desire to get a complete upper.

It seems the barrels and bolt carrier assemblies are really tough to find right now, thus finding a complete upper is equally as difficult. The only "specialty" tool for an AR upper is the barrel wrench and a standard automotive torque wrench other than the standard pin punches and C clip spreaders. I'd be happy to lend you my tools for a weekend if you want to take on the challenge. All you need is a solid bench vise.

I have every tool but the barrel wrench. Perhaps I will try it. I will have to see what I can find.

Well, i just received an email from CDNN that they have AR's in stock. Give them a call and see.

They have AR stripped Uppers in stock for 90$. Is that a worthwhile price?

Flat top A3 with or without M4 cuts? That's not a bad price especially if it comes with a dust cover and forward assist.

M4gery model completely stripped, no cover or FA parts. I found a location with complete upper receivers for 149$ and their site says in-stock. Waiting for an email back from them to confirm.

If that's in-stock, then combining that with a complete 149$ lower will be nice. Could make a build as cheap as 500-550$.

Judging from the pricing I may not want it.

I'm going to have to call you this weekend to talk prices/deals. What's a good time Saturday to give you a call?

Cris

Already talked to you. Case closed. With all this in mind, the list will be winding down a little more since we got 20 more Rock Rivers in stock last night.
