if it is for your wife...9mm all the way.. the recoil will be light and sometime .45 take a little getting use to if you go the single action 1911 route

depending on your price range i say the glock 19 and springfield XD are your best bet...both a the 500.00 price point new give or take a few bucks... if money isnt an object, the HK USP and the sig 226/228/229 are great as well but they will push the 700-800 price point and honestly dont think you get anything better for the xtra 200-300 bucks

My woman (and she's little) shoots the XD-45 just fine. Also, the XD's in 9 and 40 can be had for 459$ if you know where to look and the XD-45's can be had for 489$. Most Glock's are going to run you about 100$ more.
But if you want one pistol and one only - get the FN Five-Seven. 20 rounds of 5.7mm short-action rifle rounds traveling at 2000fps that will injure even armored attackers. Lowest recoil you'll ever experience and the ammo is plentiful unlike 9 & 45 are.
Hey look at that, this is posted in the "Ask the Instructor" section. Ignore my above comments please. Sorry! =)
A full size guvmint 1911 is one of the smoothest shooters, but so is a full sized 9mm such as a Beretta 92F or a Glock 17. The problem with most women is their typically smaller hands not properly gripping the firearm along with poor trigger reach. Find a gun that fits her hand first. The S&W M&P's have the interchangeable backstraps for different sized hands. That is often a choice for women.
Yeah I must disagree about the 45. That is my woman's favorite gun to shoot. I still prefer 9mm. In compact models you get more rounds with 9mm over a 45.
If your woman is not going to shoot all the time Umair, you should consider getting a .38 revolver for her. You need to be more efficient handling a semi-automatic firearm. Revolver there is no thinking, you have a bad round just pull the trigger again. This will also not be a enjoyable gun to shoot at the range in a concealment size.

Bring her to a range and have her try one out, maybe on one of someones next outing. Maybe hook up with Cris one day

I will gladly go to the range with you in exchange for an authentic Indian dinner.

My girl can supply the Indian dinner too.
I know I always get curry twice. During dinner, and then after ;)
I want a .45! Mine 9mm shoots well.
LMAO Matt!!! Umair knows with me to hold the curry.
